The things most _new_ users will point to as it’s strengths (particularly its package management) are debian through and through. It’s really just a somewhat polished desktop oriented debian derivative. Both are decent enough distros, but as most who’ve used Debian for any extensive period of time, Ubuntu doesn’t really bring much fundamentally new and different to the table. That’s a good point of comparison, openSUSE as compared to Ubuntu.
